Introduction to Handbuilding Pottery Class

Course Description and Expected Outcome:
This six-week introductory pottery course, students will learn the three foundational handbuilding methods—pinch, coil and slab construction—while creating a collection of functional and decorative pottery. Projects will include a pinch-built vessel, coil-built pot, slab tray or plate, simple slab mug and a final guided project that combines multiple techniques.
Students will learn clay preparation, scoring and slipping, secure joins, rim and surface refinement, handle attachment, texture, simple carving, underglaze, and glazing. Tools include rolling pins or a slab roller, templates, ribs, knives, scoring tools, texture tools, brushes, rulers and standard pottery studio tools. Completed projects will be bisque-fired and glaze-fired according to WAACC studio procedures.
Cost of clay additional and to be paid at first class. Every student will require at least 1 bag of clay ($35).

Beginner: Students are new to the art or craft being taught. No experience is required.
Intermediate: Students have a basic understanding of the art or craft being taught. Students have taken a class or workshop previously or have otherwise had hands on experience with the art or craft.
Advanced: Students have significant experience with the art or craft being taught. Students are comfortable and competent with the art or craft.
